Seven reasons to choose San Sebastian as a Winter destination

First of all, the Weather. Winter in San Sebastian is mild and not as rainy as they say. Believe us… Last December was the driest in our recorded history and when we get the wind blowing from the south, you could enjoy views like this:

One of the greatest winter shows in our city are the Waves. Big waves breaking on the seafront. Do we need to talk about Gastronomy? This is one of our strongest points and something you can enjoy any time of the year! Besides, winter offers excellent season products like artichokes or the exquisite baby eels.

Tradition is important!!! One of our favourites: going to cider houses to taste ciders fresh from the barrel, a great pair with a typical menu consisting of txistorra (the Basque sausage) cod omelette and T-bone steak.

And cider houses offer not only eating and drinking, but also their unique atmosphere and an opportunity to share with locals one of their most enjoyable ways to have fun.

Do you know the word ” gaupasa”?. In January, on the 20th, we celebrate our patron’s day, San Sebastian’s Day. The most eagerly-awaited festival of the year. It lasts 24 hours, the hoisting and lowering of the Flag in Constitution Square being two of the most emotional moments for the local people. It’s a very worthwhile experience to follow one of the drumming parades through the city streets, even in the early hours of the morning.

Too bad that Hemingway did not come this far…

Shopping is another good reason. With its history as both resort town and part of the industrial, prosperous Basque Country, it makes sense that San Sebastian offers great shopping. Having somehow resisted a total onslaught of franchises, many family-owned shops line the city’s streets, and exploring them is a great way to spend an afternoon, rainy or otherwise. And Winter is great for Sales!!

The cheapest hotel rates in the year. And this is a very good reason, considering that San Sebastian is a city with the most expensive hotel rates in Spain.

Enjoy winter in San Sebastian!!
